Andy Murray ‘shocks’ Naomi Osaka with social media post after Australian Open victory

Andy Murray left Naomi Osaka shocked by tweeting about the tournament’s 13th seed during her second round match against Madison Brengle. Osaka powered through to the next round in straight sets for the second match running after an impressive performance on Wednesday.

Osaka caught the eye on Rod Laver Arena when she took the first set 6-0 in just 20 minutes against Brengle.

The 24-year-old then saw out the match by winning the second set 6-4, seeing off her WTA number 54 ranked opponent in convincing fashion.

She will now face young American Amanda Anisimova in the third round, with their match-up scheduled for Friday.

Osaka’s performance was noted by Murray on social media, who took time out from his own preparations to praise the former womens’ No 1.

The 34-year-old Tweeted: “Anyone hit the ball cleaner from the baseline than Naomi Osaka? [fire emoji]”

That seemingly took Osaka by surprise when it was brought to her attention after seeing off Brengle.

“It’s a little bit shocking to me to see Andy Murray tweet about me,” she claimed.

“I hit with him once like three years ago.

Fellow Brit Emma Raducanu is also in action on Thursday after showing character and determination to see off former US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

Danka Kovinic awaits in the second round as Raducanu attempts to recreate her sensational 2021 exploits at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows.

Heather Watson and Dan Evans also powered through to the second round, with both matches due to take place on Thursday.

Early British success is just one of the storylines to come out of Melbourne after the Novak Djokovic saga which marred the build-up to the year’s first Grand Slam.
