Ankita Raina, Prajnesh Gunneswaran nominated by AITA for Arjuna, Balram Singh, Enrico Piperno for Dronacharya

Ankita Raina will make her Olympic debut next month in Tokyo and is the top ranked singles and doubles player in the country.

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has nominated Asian Games bronze medallists Ankita Raina and Prajnesh Gunneswaran for the Arjuna Award. Balram Singh and Enrico Piperno have meanwhile been nominated for the Dronacharya Award.

“This year we have nominated Ankita and Prajnesh for Arjuna while the names of very respected Balram sir and Enrico Piperno have been sent for lifetime achievement honour, Dhyanchand,” an All Indian Tennis Association (AITA) official told news agency PTI.

Ankita will make her Olympic debut next month in Tokyo and is the top ranked singles and doubles player in the country. The 28-year-old has been instrumental to the Indian team in the Billie Jean King Cup for the past three years.

Ankita was nominated for the Arjuna last year as well but it went to Asian Games gold medallist Divij Sharan.

Gunneswaran, meanwhile, is India’s top ranked men’s singles player. The 31-year-old Chennai player has played five Davis Cup ties for the country. In the Lifetime achievement category, Balram Singh, who has a 50 year-long association with the Indian tennis, will vie for the honour along with Piperno, who coached the Davis Cup team between 1991-2001 for 27 consecutive ties.
