Anthony Mackie Says Twisted Metal TV Series ‘Points a Finger’ at Certain Political Issues

Peacock’s Twisted Metal TV series carries a topical political message that Anthony Mackie says shines a light on the real-life “class war”.

During a recent interview with Inverse, Mackie, who plays John Doe, revealed the Twisted Metal TV series is not all about killer clowns and vehicular combat; it actually raises a timely political issue regarding the social class disparities in our modern society.

“We’re slowly becoming the haves and the have-nots in real life,” he observed. “We’re living in these gated communities, in these unaffordable neighborhoods. Really, it’s becoming a class war in real life. That’s what this show points a finger at.”

While serious subjects are at play, Mackie had fun with his character. He plays an amnesiac, post-apocalyptic outsider tasked with delivering a mysterious package across the wasteland. He said the role unleashes his “wacky and dark” side because it’s “tailored” to his sense of humor.

Fans of the cult PlayStation franchise have had mixed feelings about what they’ve seen of the series so far. One clip showed Mackie’s John Doe getting smacked around by Sweet Tooth, the murderous clown voiced by Will Arnett, before pausing to sing Sisqó’s “Thong Song”.

The Twisted Metal TV series is based on an original take by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland) and written by Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai), so we will have to see how it all pans out when all 10 installments of the series drop on Peacock on July 27.
