apple: Apple makes the push for a passwordless future with macOS Ventura – Times of India

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of the password’s death may not have been greatly exaggerated. At least if Apple — along with Google, Microsoft and others — are successful in their pursuit of a passwordless world. Apple gave us a glimpse at what a passwordless world will look like while previewing macOS. Ventura
With macOS Ventura, Mac users will get the option to use passkeys. Apple has worked with the FIDO Alliance to implement passkeys and said that it is the first step in doing away with passwords for good.
What are passkeys and how will they replace passwords?
Apple calls it the “next-generation credentials that are more secure, easy to use, and designed to replace passwords.” A passkey will be a unique digital key that stays on the device and is never stored on a web server. Hackers will not be able to leak them or trick users into sharing them.
Passkeys make it simple to sign-in securely, using Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification. On Apple devices, courtesy of the iCloud Keychain, passkeys will sync across Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption. Apple also said that they will also work across apps and the web. Users can even sign in to websites or apps on non-Apple devices using their iPhones.
Will passkeys be available only for Apple devices?
No. Apple, Google, Microsoft and others have committed to do away with passwords. Apple is just the first one to implement it on its OS platforms. We can expect Google and Microsoft to follow suit as well.
When will passkeys be available for users?
macOS Ventura will be rolled out later this year. We expect it to happen sometime in September or October, which is when users will be able to use them. The beta version of macOS Ventura will roll out before that but we aren’t sure if passkeys will be a part of it or not.
