apple: Apple may use electronic paper display technology in foldable iPhones and iPads: What is it and how it will help – Times of India
Apple is reportedly testing electronic paper display (EPD) technology for future foldable iPhones or iPads. As per the latest tweet by known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the implementation of EPD tech in foldable devices will help in battery saving. “Apple is testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for future foldable device’s cover screen & tablet-like applications. The color EPD has the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable devices’ must-have cover/second screen thanks to its excellent power-saving” Kuo’s tweet reads.
What is electronic paper display
For those who do not know, electronic paper displays mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Unlike regular displays, EPDs reflect ambient light like paper. These displays are easy on the eyes and offer a wider viewing angle than most light-emitting displays. The technology also consumes significantly less battery.
As per previous tweets by Kuo, we may have to wait a bit longer to see the first foldable iPhone as Apple is reportedly testing a new device with a 9-inch foldable display. According to him, the tech giant is working on a product with a foldable OLED display and PPI between iPhone and iPad, to verify key technologies.
Last year, Kuo predicted that Apple may launch a foldable iPhone as soon as 2024 but in his recent tweets, the analyst has predicted the launch to 2025. Kuo’s comments came after a report by Korean publisher TheElec claimed that Apple is partnering with LG to develop foldable OLED display panel with ultra-thin cover glass for future tablets and notebooks. Similar details about a foldable MacBook were shared by display industry consultant Ross Young earlier this year.
