Apple AR/VR headset leaks ahead of WWDC announcement, launch teased with AR Easter egg
Separately, for years Apple has included easter eggs of AR on its event page leading up to the WWDC. The company introduced the first easter egg during the iPad and Apple Watch Series 6 event and has become a tradition ever since. This year too there are AR/VR easter eggs.
Apple XR headset display specifications
- According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Apple’s XR headset will feature micro-OLED displays that exceed 5,000 nits of peak brightness. In comparison, the panels of the iPhone 14 Pro have a maximum output of 2,000 units.
- However, it should be noted that the brightness that reaches the eye could be significantly reduced, depending on the lenses used in Apple’s headset.
- The glass screen of the iPhone lets all light pass but to allow users to focus on a screen that’s just about an inch from the eye, a special lens is needed, resulting in much lower brightness.
- Young also said that the display resolution is 4K per eye with a 4,000 pixel-per-inch density.
- This could probably be the sharpest image seen in a consumer headset, including the Varjo Aero.
- Each eye is said to have a 1.41-inch display, which seems large enough for a good FoV depending on the lenses used.
Apple AR/VR headset Easter Eggs
- To uncover the AR Easter egg for WWDC23, users need to do is visit the Apple Events webpage on their iPhone or iPad.
- On that page, they need to tap on the morphing Apple logo located at the top of the page. As soon as they do so, an AR experience will unfold.
- The AR experience showcases a static Apple logo shadow alongside a morphing Apple logo that occasionally reveals the date of the event.
- Users will have full control over the Apple logo, thereby allowing them to rotate in any direction and adjust the size by pinching or expanding their fingers.
- They can choose to view the AR experience or focus solely on the captivating morphing Apple object that is set against a subtle grey background.
Apple VR headset price, features (expected)
- The Apple AR/VR headset is tipped to be equipped with dual processors fabbed by TSMC, 12 cameras and an external power supply.
- The headset will have the option to switch between augmented and virtual reality modes using a Digital Crown-like control knob.
- There could be multiple cameras that can read facial expressions, map the surrounding areas, and detect body movements.
- As for the price, rumours claim that the Apple Reality Pro headset could be priced at $3,000, so it will be aimed at professionals and not regular users.
