Apple CEO Tim Cook just shared one of the iPhone’s ‘biggest secret’ – Times of India
Apple CEO Tim Cook is on a tour of Japan with SVP of marketing Greg Joswiak. The two visited Sony’s facility at Kumamoto, shared Cook in a tweet. And the tweet makes one big revelation: that Apple and Sony’s partnership goes back a decade and that Sony is behind the iPhone’s camera, meaning that every iPhone we saw in the last ten years had Sony sensors. So, if you have ever wondered who makes the sensors for the iPhone, you now have the answer.
“We’ve been partnering with Sony for over a decade to create the world’s leading camera sensors for the iPhone. Thanks to Ken and everyone on the team for showing me around the cutting-edge facility in Kumamoto today.” The photo accompanying the tweet shows Sony engineers demonstrating the iPhone 14’s camera to Cook.
Apple’s partnership with Sony goes 10 years back
Apple has always been tight-lipped about what goes inside the iPhone; whether it is the keynote or the specification sheet, the company never tells who manufactured the components.
This is the first time Apple or any of its executives has publicly confirmed that Sony is the company that makes camera sensors for iPhones and also that the last ten-generation of iPhones, presumably since the iPhone 5 or 5S, have used Sony sensors.
The next iPhone may also use Sony’s sensor
Cook’s visit to Sony suggests that the partnership between the two companies is to continue, corroborating a recent report of Nikkei Asia, which says that Sony would supply an advanced camera sensor for the upcoming iPhone.
Though it is still unclear if the sensors inside the iPhones are custom-made for iPhones, Nikkei Asia reports that the sensor designed for next year’s iPhone would also be made available to other manufacturers.
