Apple could launch a VR/AR headset sometime in late 2022 | Digit

Do note that Apple itself has not made any announcements or even revealed anything regarding the mixed reality headset

It looks like Apple could be making its way to the VR and AR market with a ‘mixed reality’ headset. In a new concept by artist Ian Zelbo, one can see what the new headset could look like. Do note that Apple itself has not made any announcements or even revealed anything regarding the mixed reality headset. Earlier in the year, we reported that the headset could come with a high-res display and cinematic speakers for a truly immersive experience. The headset’s aim was to ‘make it impossible for a user to differentiate the virtual world from the real one’.

In fact, according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could release the headset at the end of 2022. In a report on 9to5Mac, Kuo stated that the headset could operate without being paired with an iPhone and will support a wide range of different apps. It could also come with Mc-level computing power, which means that it could be as powerful as a proper PC. He also stated that the headset will launch with two processors. He said, “The higher-end processor will have similar computing power as the M1 for Mac, whereas the lower-end processor will be in charge of sensor-related computing.”.

Back in 2019, we also reported that Apple had filed a patent for an Augmented Reality headset. According to the patent for ‘Display System having Sensors,’ the device in question is to have a collection of cameras to track and map the external environment. This is in line with what we’ve seen of other mixed reality headsets like those from HTC and Oculus. However, Apple’s patent also includes sensors on the inside of the headset to track the eyes of the wearer. The patent covers the potential inclusion of more sensors like those to track the wearer’s eyebrows, lower jaw, head pose, etc.
