Apple cracks down on leaks about its products – Times of India

Leaks and tips are a thriving part of the smartphone and gadgets industry. There are prolific leakers who are clued in with industry insiders and often reveal product features and specifications much before the actual launch. Apple hasn’t taken kindly to these tipsters and has once again threatened to crack down. According to a report by Vice, Apple has sent another cease and desist letter to a leaker from China, who has been leaking information on social media about iPhone prototype.
As per the report, the letter which Apple sent reads, “Through investigation, Apple has obtained relevant evidence about your unauthorised disclosure of Apple’s unreleased and rumoured products.”
Apple further told the leaker, “Your intentional infringement is specifically manifested as: publishing unpublished information about Apple’s new products through social media platforms, including but not limited to the design and performance of these new products.”
Two other known leakers from China were warned of legal action by Apple in June if they didn’t stop revealing details of future products.

Why Apple is ‘angry’ over leaks

Apple is one of the few brands who enjoys maintaining secrecy about its products. The leakers thrive on this as even a leak about a colour of an Apple product can drive traffic or get them recognition. There are brands who are rumoured to indirectly end up leaking information to create a buzz about their products. Apple hasn’t been able to stop leaks about its products but has been cracking hard on them. It has been suggested that Apple is deliberately trying to leak misinformation about products to find out who’s behind these leaks. As we said, Apple is a brand that thrives on the anticipation and has built a certain hype machine about its products. The leaks tend to spoil that hype and perhaps that’s why the Cupertino-based tech giant is cracking hard on leakers.
