Apple iOS 16 iMessage features: unsending iMessage time limit reduced

The edit and unsend options are new additions which were previously absent in earlier generations of iOS. iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 are currently in the public development phase and are likely to undergo many such changes before their roll to the general user.

iOS 16 Edit and unsend features on iMessagE

Apple’s new iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 operating systems are getting new edit and unsending features on the iMessage app for the first time. It has now been noticed that iMessage will now show the recipient the edit history on a particular message. The unsend feature has also been restricted to two minutes after a message has been sent, from the earlier 15 minutes.

iMessage on iOS 16 got an edit feature that would allow a user to edit a sent text. The new iOS 16 beta update has now introduced a feature via which the recipient can see the edit history of an edited message. This can be accessed by tapping on a small blue label which reads, “Edited”. The history can then be hidden again by tapping on the “Hide Edits” button. Earlier, this feature was absent.

The new beta update also brings a limit of five edits to a message before the edit option vanishes. The edit option will be available for a 15-minute window. The undo send feature has now also been limited to a window of just two minutes down from the previous 15 minutes.

Interestingly, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, tweeted suggesting a workaround to this feature. According to Gurman one could easily unsend a message and then retype a message, thus not allowing the recipient to view previous texts in the ‘Edited’ section. Moreover, users on previous versions of iOS will still get to see all original texts whether or not they’ve been unsent or edited.

These new developments come through with the latest iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 beta 4.
