Apple iPhone 15 Pro models could ditch 8P camera lenses: Ming-Chi Kuo | Digit

Although the iPhone 14 Pro has just moved out of the assembly line, tipsters and analysts have already started mining information about the iPhone 15 series. Expected to come out in 2023, the iPhone 15 series can significantly improve the camera and performance. However, the upgrades might be restricted to the Pro variants. Last week, we reported how the upcoming iPhone 15 series Pro models could feature an 8P camera lens. Recently, a known analyst has predicted otherwise.

Apple might stick to 8P lenses on the iPhone 15 Pro models

Analyst at TF International Securities, Ming-Chi Kuo, suggests that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro series will stick to 7P camera lenses (also used on the iPhone 14 Pro series), contrary to recent rumours. Kuo writes in a tweet that he thinks the rumoured iPhone 15 Pro series’ adoption of an 8P lens “won’t likely come true.” For the uninitiated, the words 7P and 8P refer to the number of elements in a lens.

For instance, the iPhone 14 Pro comes with camera lenses made of seven elements. Now, the shift to 8P lenses on the iPhone 15 Pro would have been a considerable upgrade as the image quality increases with the number of elements in a lens. Since this might not happen, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max will likely feature the same camera sensors as their predecessors.

Another report suggests otherwise

However, a recent report from TrendForce stated otherwise. As per the report, the Pro models in the upcoming iPhone series will come with an 8P primary camera and a periscope lens. Now that Kuo says that the 8P primary camera lens is unlikely, the only camera upgrade we will get with the models will be the periscope lens. To catch up, periscope lenses have been used in smartphones to provide optical zoom. Although the latest iPhones do not have a periscope lens, the Pixel 7 Pro comes with one that provides up to 5x optical zoom.

The same report suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro and non-Pro models will feature different chipsets. Just like the iPhone 14 series, the non-Pro iPhone 15 models will ship with an older chipset, while the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to feature the unreleased A17 Bionic processor.

Interestingly, a recent directive from the European Union asks all brands to include a USB-C port on their products, including smartphones, tablets, speakers and so on. Hence, Apple has no option but to comply with the directive and, for the first time, ship iPhones with USB-C ports. For what it’s worth, a USB-C port on an iPhone will solve multiple connectivity issues and allow users to connect their smartphone to several devices.
