Apple may have renamed ‘RealityOS’ to ‘xrOS’ as it prepares for the launch of its first mixed-reality headset – Times of India
Apple has reportedly come up with a new name for “RealityOS,” the operating system that is said to power the Cupertino giant’s first mixed-reality headset. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that the “RealityOS” or “rOS” is now being referred to as “xrOS” internally, says the people associated with the project.
The “XR” of “xrOS” stands for “eXtended Reality,” which encompasses both AR and VR or a mixed-reality experience, something that Apple’s upcoming headset would be all about.
The team working on the operating system is reportedly a secretive unit known as the Technology Development Group, led by Mike Rockwell. Meanwhile, Geoff Stahl, senior engineering manager at Apple, who has been at the company for 24 years now, is the one responsible for the operating system.
The mixed-reality operating system of Apple is said to include XR versions of the core applications, such as Messages, FaceTime, and Maps. Further, a software development kit for third parties would be released to allow for the development of apps and games.
“xrOS” trademark registered in the EU, UK, Canada, and other countries
The report notes that a new shell corporation, Deep Dive, has filed trademark applications for “xrOS” in a number of countries, including the UK, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Ukraine, the Philippines, Australia, Japan, Canada, and the European Union. Further, the company is in the early stages of registering its trademark in the United States.
It has been a tradition for Apple to register trademarks via shell companies in countries months before introducing the product. Earlier this year, another shell company of Apple, Immersive Health Solutions LLC, registered for the “Reality One,” “Reality Pro,” and “Reality Processor” trademarks in different countries.
What we know about Apple’s upcoming headset
The mixed-reality headset of Apple has been in talks for a long time. There were rumours of Apple giving a sneak peek at the upcoming headset sometime this year, but we did not see anything this year. Now, rumours have it that the headset may arrive early next year, though we still do not know exactly when, and it may cost around $3,000.
