Apple may not like the word “metaverse,” but apparently, it is building one – Times of India
“A word I’ll never use,” said Greg Joswiak, marketing chief at Apple, when asked about metaverse during an interview. But, it seems Apple is allegedly building a metaverse of its own, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Power On, Gurman discusses the much-awaited AR/VR headset of Apple, which might be coming early next year. With this mixed-reality headset, Apple will be entering a wholly new category, a little different from what it worked on till now. And the company is looking for new people to work on fostering its upcoming headset with content.
As per Gurman, the Cupertino giant is looking for a “software producer with experience in visual effects and game asset pipeline,” hinting that the company might be working on “3D content that can be played in virtual reality.” Further, Apple is also looking for developers who can work on the App Intents framework, building apps that can work with Siri, Shortcuts, and Search.
Nevertheless, one of the most notable listings is for someone who can build and handle a 3D mixed-reality world similar to the metaverse. But, do not expect to call it that, as the market chief is not quite fond of the name, possibly because it is a term heavily associated with Meta.
The listing reads, “You will work closely with Apple’s UI framework, human interface designers and system capabilities teams—pushing you to think outside-the-box, and solve incredibly challenging and interesting problems in the 3D application space.”
It has been long known that the mixed-reality headset, rumoured to be called Reality One or Reality Pro, would launch next year, probably in the first quarter. If rumours are to be believed, the headset could be priced somewhere between $2,000 (around Rs 1,62,442) to $3,000 (around Rs 2,43,663).
There have been reports of Apple in talks with big names in Hollywood, including Jon Favreau, who is said to be working on adapting the Prehistoric Planet for the upcoming AR/VR headset.
