apple: Microsoft gains an ‘Edge’ over Apple’s Safari – Times of India

For a long time, there used to be a running joke that the only purpose of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was to download Chrome or Firefox or any other browser. Microsoft, however, has almost binned Internet Explorer and replaced it with the Edge browser. In a relatively short time, Edge has come leaps and bounds in terms of features. And now it is the second most popular browser on desktops.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, which cites data from Statcounter, Microsoft Edge is now being used by more people than Apple’s Safari browser. In March 2022, Edge had about 10.1% of browser share on desktop. Safari, on the other hand, has 9.61% share. Google Chrome remains the undisputed leader with about 66.64% share, according to Statcounter data.
To put it simply, the user base of Windows-based PCs is far bigger than those of Apple’s Mac devices. Edge does come pre-installed on all Windows PC just like Safari with Mac devices. However, it does seem like Mac users are picking other browsers over Safari. Moreover, it also comes as a surprise as Apple has been selling more Macs in the last few quarters. During its quarterly earnings call, Apple revealed that the revenue from Mac in the quarter was up almost 15% and Apple raked in close to $10.4 billion.
A recent report by Counterpoint Research also revealed that Apple had a very good previous quarter when it comes to Mac. Sales of Mac was up 8% compared to the previous quarter whereas other Windows PC brands saw their market share plummet. The report by Counterpoint Research stated that Lenovo’s shipments dropped by 10% whereas HP saw a decline of 16% in shipments. So it does suggest that people may be buying more Macs than before but their choice of browser might not be Safari.
