Apple Watch may arrive with micro-LED display in 2025: Report – Times of India

The current Apple Watch lineup uses OLED displays. Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is reportedly planning to switch micro-LED panels for its smartwatches by 2025. According to a report by 9to5Mac, industry analyst Ross Young has revealed that Apple may upgrade its smartwatch display and start using micro-LED panels for Apple Watch within the next two years. Previously, another analyst named Jeff Pu claimed that the company is planning to increase the screen size of the Apple Watch Ultra and switch to micro-LED display technology starting in 2024.
Apple Watch may come with micro-LED displays
As per the report, Apple is likely to start producing micro-LED panels for the Apple Watch in 2024. The report also claims that the first product is expected to become available for customers by spring 2025.
Apple’s plans with micro-LED displays
Apple has been working with micro-LED displays for a long time now. Earlier, in 2019, a report claimed that the Apple Watch may switch to microLED panels as soon as 2020. However, that didn’t happen and the company retained the OLED display technology since it was introduced in 2015. The latest and most expensive Apple Watch Ultra also sports an OLED screen.
Micro-LED displays: Importance
The micro-LED display offers multiple advantages over the currently used OLED panels. Not only do micro-LED panels support higher levels of brightness, but it also offers more consistent colour output than OLED. Apart from this, micro-LED panels are also more power efficient and are less vulnerable to screen burn-in compared to OLEDs. Power efficiency is very important on the Apple Watch as every minute of battery life counts.
The report explains that changes in display technology are significant when they can offer improvements in aspects like power efficiency and battery life. If an Apple Watch with micro-LED can improve battery life, especially on the non-Ultra models, this change is worth making, the report adds.
