Apple Watch Ultra may offer a microLED display in 2024 | Digit

Back in 2014, Apple acquired LuxVue, which is a company that conducts microLED research. It has been believed that the tech giant has used this acquisition to conduct research and production in Taiwan and California, to better understand the use cases of microLED in its devices. Now, rumours indicate that we may see an Apple device with a microLED display soon.

Rumours indicate that the Apple Watch Ultra may just be the first Apple product to use a microLED display. This high-end sports watch will allegedly offer a bigger 2.1-inch microLED display in 2024, according to a report that has been published by MacRumours. The report is based on a research note created by Jeff Pu, who is an analyst who works at Haitong International Securities (a Hong Kong-based investment firm). It is essential to note that Pu has made many predictions about upcoming developments in the past, with some proving to be true, and others falling flat.

MicroLED should not be confused with miniLED, which is a type of backlighting technology we see in many LCD TVs. The major difference is that the pixels in a microLED display can generate their own colour and light, like an OLED display. Using this may result in a much brighter display that also performs well during outdoor use.
