Apple’s next monitor may double up as a smart display – Times of India
Apple might be developing a new monitor with a custom Apple silicon chip, similar to the Studio Display. But, the new monitor might also double up as a smart display, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter.
This chip would be similar to the A13, which can be found inside the Studio Display. The purpose of A13 on the Studio Display is limited to its camera and speaker system, powering features such as Center Stage and Spatial Audio. However, the chip inside the new monitor would let it work independently of the Mac, which means it could function as a smart display even when not in use.
It has been speculated that Apple is working on a 27-inch mini-LED display and a successor to the expensive Apple Pro Display XDR. These displays are said to have the ability to summon Siri built-in.
The smart display feature that Gurman is talking about seems to have similarities to the StandBy function on iPhone, which should be available with iOS 17 later this year.
With StandBy, iPhones can act as smart displays when they are plugged in and turned horizontally. StandBy can display the schedule before a meeting, as well as live updates on important events, delivery status, sports scores, and many more. There is also the ease of editing widgets in the Standby, and one can choose a smart stack as well.
Furthermore, this feature enables hands-free usage of Siri, just like the HomePod. You can request Siri to play music and receive visual feedback on your phone when asking questions. So, now you can see how the built-in Siri could come in use on the upcoming monitors.
There were also rumours of Apple working on a similar iPad-like smart display. It was expected that the iPad would be the first to get the Standby, turning them into smart displays when docked to a magnetic stand, but Apple did not announce the Standby for iPadOS.
According to Gurman, the release of the new monitor is not expected until next year at the earliest.
