Apple’s RealityOS may soon be a ‘reality’ – Times of India

Apple’s mixed-reality headset is one of the most anticipated products of the year, and even though it is not yet launched, it has been making headlines for months. While there are a bunch of rumours and reports suggesting an imminent launch, there is newfound evidence that corroborates all the rumours going around.
Recently, the preview build for Apple Devices, the replacement for iTunes, was released on iTunes. And a Twitter user, @aaronp613, dug within the app, finding references to “realityOS” and “xrOS” in the source code.
The “realityOS” and “xrOS” are associated with Apple’s mixed-reality project, which is supposedly known as “Reality Pro.” These names have been touted as the potential names for the operating system of the upcoming mixed-reality ‘Reality Pro’ headset.
What will Apple’s mixed-reality operating system be called
Last year, Apple registered the name “realityOS” under a shell company, and many expected it to be the name for the operating system for the upcoming mixed-reality headset; multiple reports corroborated the same.
But, last month, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported that Apple has decided to go ahead with the name ‘xrOS’ for the operating system, referring to the extended reality, compassing both virtual and augmented reality functionalities of the upcoming headset. Gurman reiterated the same in his recent Power On newsletter.
Apple’s mixed-reality headset may launch this spring
The first mixed-reality headset of Apple, the Reality Pro, is expected to make a show in Spring this year, suggest Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo. However, the headset may not be available for purchase until later this year.
As per the rumours, the mixed-reality headset will feature 12 tracking cameras, and high-resolution displays, expected to be a minimum 4K. Further, the headset is expected to come with support for pass-through mode. Rumours have it that the Reality Pro will cost somewhere around $3,000.
