Arsenal and Chelsea to consider Ronald Araujo transfer if Barcelona contract not agreed

Arsenal and Chelsea will consider moves for Ronald Araujo should the Barcelona centre-back fail to agree a new contract at Camp Nou, Express Sport understands. The 23-year-old Uruguayan has become a cornerstone of Xavi’s side since forcing his way into the first-team set-up under Ronald Koeman.

Araujo has been one of only few shining lights during arguably the darkest period in Barcelona’s illustrious history.

Barcelona chiefs are keen to award the defender with a new bumper contract that reflects his value to his manager but so far, negotiations have struggled to bear fruit.

Instead, the La Liga giants are now fearing they will lose their ball-playing centre-back on a free transfer.

Talks are continuing between the two parties with Barca still hopeful they will find an agreement with Araujo and his representatives.

Saliba has made quite the impression once again this season in France while on loan at Marseille.

Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes are set to remain Arsenal’s first-choice centre-back pairing but the Gunners are now keen on improving their squad depth.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are actively looking for reinforcements at the heart of defence.

Their current sanctions mean they are set to lose Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and potentially Cesar Azpilicueta upon the expiry of their contracts in June.

Araujo is thought to be appreciated by Tuchel, who is also keen on Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

Chelsea want to sign a young defender with world-class potential and Araujo ticks that box.

The Blues are also monitoring other options though including Matthijs de Ligt and Tuchel’s former PSG player Marquinhos.

The European champions are still waiting to discover whether they will be able to sign players this summer.
