Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could replicate Arsene Wenger’s final signing by Monday deadline

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has just five days to complete a signing which could save the Gunners’ season. Arsenal have exited both domestic cup competitions this month with a whimper. Arteta has no European football to fall back on so it is top four or bust in terms of a successful season for the north London side.

Arsenal spent more than any other club in Europe last summer.

And, while Champions League qualification was not expected this season, they must now give it their best shot.

Arsenal are the only club competing for the top four who have no other competitions to focus on for the remainder of the campaign.

Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United are still in the FA Cup, with the latter also in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

On transfer deadline day in January 2018, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Arsenal for a then club-record fee.

There’s no arguing that for the next two-and-a-half years Aubameyang was one of the top strikers in the Premier League.

He almost single-handedly won the Gunners their record 14th FA Cup in 2020, scoring a brace in both the semi-final and final wins over Manchester City and Chelsea.

It is clear Aubameyang has no future at the Emirates after his latest disciplinary breach.

The Gunners should be applauded for attempting to sign one of Europe’s top talents.

But now they must move on to an alternative target before next Monday’s transfer deadline.

Alexander Isak and Jonathan David are two names from Europe who have been linked, along with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Arteta needs to sign his own Aubameyang, just as Wenger did four years ago.

But time is running out on both the window and Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top four.
