Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta uses peculiar ‘zoo’ and ‘jungle’ analogy
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has defended his heavily-mocked decision to blast ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ over speakers during a training session before a previous match against Liverpool by insisting “you cannot train the players in the zoo and then go to the jungle”. It was last season when Arsenal were filmed for Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ documentary.
The series featured some memorable moments, including the time when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had the captaincy stripped from him for his behaviour. But it was Arteta’s decision to have his players train with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ playing in the background that caught the attention of many.
The Arsenal boss admitted at the time that it was “one of my crazy ideas” – and it appeared to backfire as Liverpool went on to win 4-0. Arteta’s intention was to try and recreate the atmosphere at Anfield where Arteta admitted it was the only stadium where he felt “stuck” as a player.
And Arteta has now regrets on his unique training regime for that fateful match while using an unusual metaphor to describe his decision. “You have to prepare the players,” he said.
“You have to tell them what they’re going to be facing and you have to recognise that. You have to expose yourself, you cannot train the players in the zoo and then go to the jungle on Sunday. It’s impossible.”
Arsenal are now in a different place entirely this season with Jurgen Klopp’s side struggling to find any kind of form. Liverpool’s low position in the table has led to questions being raised on Klopp’s future at Anfield with Graham Potter becoming the 12th Premier League manager to be sacked this season.
