Arsenal could have made vital error after rejecting ‘one of the best’

Arsenal could be watching Alexander Isak’s impressive exploits at Newcastle United this season with regret after the Swedish striker previously slipped through their grasp. Isak is helping fire Newcastle toward Champions League qualification as Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge stalls.

The Gunners reportedly pursued Isak in January 2022 while he was catching the eye at Real Sociedad, but nothing came to fruition.

Instead, Mikel Arteta splashed out £45million to bring Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City last summer.

In the same transfer window, Isak joined Newcastle in a club-record £63m deal and has enjoyed a stronger individual campaign in front of goal than the Brazilian.

The 23-year-old has registered 11 goals in 22 appearances in his maiden season in England.

Meanwhile, Jesus has scored nine times in 27 games, although his seven assists pay credit to his positive impact on Arsenal as a team.

But Arteta has missed a ruthless goalscorer down the middle at times this season, while Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City possess the most prolific striker on the planet.

Erling Haaland is producing a record-breaking debut season on English shores, scoring 48 goals in 42 appearances as City eye the treble.

Signing Isak could’ve gone a long way in helping the Gunners lift their first title since 2004 as their grip on top spot continues to slip.

And in March, former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp told BetVictor that Isak has the makings of ‘one of the best’ around.

He said: “It’s been an injury-interrupted season for Alexander Isak, but he always impresses me. I thought his goal against Forest was superb.

“That was such a natural striker’s finish. I think this lad has all the tools to become one of the very best.”

Arsenal travel to City on Wednesday night for what is being described as the 2022/23 title decider at the Etihad Stadium.

If Arteta’s side taste defeat, their lead will be cut to just two points, having played two more games than the Citizens.
