Arsenal deal finalised early in transfer window set to save Arteta millions

Securing William Saliba to a new contract can save Arsenal millions in future transfer windows. The Frenchman was one of the breakthrough stars of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, shining for the Gunners as they plotted a shock title bid before having his season ended prematurely.

Arsenal are reportedly set to announce Saliba’s new deal. A fresh four-year extension until 2027 has apparently been signed.

Saliba had a deal that ran until 2024, meaning Arsenal risked losing the 22-year-old for free next summer. Several sides in the Premier League and from abroad were apparently interested in a free transfer for the centre-back.

Some reports several weeks ago claimed that Arsenal were left shocked by some of Saliba’s demands. There was concern that a deal might not be struck and that the former Marseille loanee would leave for nothing in a year’s time.

However, that now does not seem to be the case, with The Athletic suggesting that a new contract is close to being signed. It is the best piece of business Arsenal may compete this summer.

Saliba was one of the stars of Arsenal’s surprise push for the Premier League title. Forming an excellent partnership with Gabriel, the Gunners finally enjoyed a settled centre-back pairing and were reaping the rewards.

The defender, who cost £27million in 2019, was Arsenal’s best player for a large part of the campaign. While his absence was not the primary reason for their demise, their drop in form coincided with Saliba suffering a season-ending back injury.

Had they been forced to lose Saliba either this summer or next, Arsenal would have needed to funnel most of their transfer budget into signing a replacement for the France international. Instead, Mikel Arteta can focus on other targets in an attempt to continue chasing Manchester City for the Premier League title.
