Arsenal given food for thought as target Martinez ‘not far behind’ Haaland

Arsenal have been offered some food for thought by Jurgen Klinsmann in their pursuit of Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine international has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer as Mikel Arteta looks to add depth to his ranks.

The Gunners progressed significantly this season and topped the table for the majority of the campaign. However, a lack of quality in depth took its toll at a crucial stage in the campaign, giving Manchester City a glimmer of hope – and they took their chance.

Arsenal will be hoping to strengthen their ranks so that they can mount an equally as strong title charge next season, with sporting director Edu strapping in for a busy few months. Arteta has highlighted that he needs recruits in all departments, including in the final third.

Martinez is one of several players to be cited as an Arsenal target, and the 25-year-old has recently been compared to City stay Erling Haaland. Speaking to The Mirror, Klinsmann explained: “Haaland is an incredible No 9 – and he could demolish a bus.

“But Lautaro has evolved and is not far behind. He’s on the same level as the top strikers.” Martinez has scored 21 and assisted six in 37 Serie A appearances so far this season, showing a versatility to lead the line as well as play in a two-man strike force alongside a more direct focal point. The former Racing star has often been deployed with a target man-type this season, with Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko battling out for the No 9 spot in Simone Inzaghi’s side.

Arsenal will have the chance to see how Martinez will fare up against one of the best defences in the world when Inter take on Pep Guardiola’s City in the Champions League final later this month. Given how Inzaghi likes to rotate his squad, there has been conversations about who could lead the line for the Italian giants this summer.
