Arun Jaitley Stadium to undergo major renovation ahead of ODI World Cup, DDCA aims to enhance fan experience | Cricket News – Times of India
Following a Gap assessment conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in April, it was revealed that Delhi, along with Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Mohali, required substantial upgrades. However, Mohali did not make the final list of ten World Cup venues announced on Tuesday.
India’s passion for cricket has soared over the past decade, with the BCCI raking in billions from broadcast rights. However, the comfort and needs of the fans have often been neglected, as many stadiums across the country lack basic facilities.
Rajan Manchanda, joint secretary at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), expressed gratitude to the BCCI for allocating five World Cup matches to the Arun Jaitley Stadium. He emphasised the DDCA‘s commitment to improving the stadium infrastructure to ensure a pleasant experience for the fans during the mega event.
“We thank the BCCI for awarding us five games. We need to improve the stadium infrastructure to make it a pleasant experience for the fans and will be focused on that ahead of the mega event,” said Manchanda.
Among the planned upgrades are the replacement of approximately 10,000 spectator seats, renovation of washrooms, fresh paintwork, and a change in the ticketing software. Additionally, the 15-year-old turnstiles will be replaced to enhance entry to the venue.
“Our aim is to provide clean washrooms and hygienic food and water at a reasonable price to our fans. The strength of the housekeeping staff will also be increased. We plan to complete all the work by September 15,” added Manchanda.
To ensure the venue meets the highest standards, teams from the BCCI and the International Cricket Council will conduct a thorough recce of the Arun Jaitley Stadium, including an evaluation of the pitch and outfield, in the third week of July.
One notable challenge for fans attending matches at the stadium is the absence of a roof covering the open stands, leading to exposure to the sun. Rectifying this design flaw would require demolishing and rebuilding the existing structure.
Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium will host its opening game on October 7, featuring South Africa and a Qualifier. The biggest clash at the venue will be on October 11 when India take on Afghanistan. Additionally, Afghanistan will face England on October 14. The remaining two league matches are scheduled for October 25 and November 6.
