Asian Games: Hong Kong’s Yue leaps into record books, seals long jump bronze

Asian Games 2023: Hong Kong’s Tiffany Yue takes leap into city’s record books to seal long jump bronze

Hong Kong’s Tiffany Yue Nga-yan put in the performance of a lifetime to claim Asian Games bronze in the women’s long jump on Monday, in a contest won by Chinese teenager Xiong Shiqi.

Yue soared a personal best 6.50 metres at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium, bettering the 6.49 she posted at a meet in Lisbon, Portugal, in June last year.

The 25-year-old’s form this year, however, had not hinted at a new personal best and Hong Kong record, given she only managed 6.23 when finishing seventh at the Asian Championships.

And her opening leap of 6.21 did little to suggest her next attempt would send her into the history books.

“I’d thought 6.5 meters was something I should be able to do here but I wasn’t expecting that would be enough to hold on for a bronze,” she said.

“It’s been a long while since I managed that 6.49m jump, but soon after that I was injured, and those days with former coach [Rolf Ohman] didn’t really quite work out.

“Things only got better since I started training again with Animo Chan, and with this jump here and the medal, it proves Hong Kong athletes and coaches are capable of achieving good results.”

All of the medallists posted personal bests. Shiqi, 19 years old and in her own words at her first Asian Games “to learn”, took gold with a jump of 6.73m and India’s Ancy Sojan Edappilly claiming silver with a best of 6.63m.

“I came here just wanting to compete, and to experience the atmosphere of competing at the Asian Games,” she said. “After all, I’m only 19, I still have a long runway ahead of me.”
