Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD Delisted On Steam, Won’t Be Playable After September 1

The Steam page of Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD was quietly updated to say that the game is no longer available for purchase. Access to it will also be removed after September 1, 2022.

This is in contrast to other examples of delisting, such as when Assassin’s Creed III and several GTA titles were delisted as their respective remasters released. While the original PC version of GTA: San Andreas is no longer available for purchase, if you own the game, you can still download and play it. As of September 1, 2022, that will no longer be true for Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD.

Liberation is technically still available on Steam, as a remaster of the game was packaged with the Assassin’s Creed III remaster. However, considering that title’s $40 price tag, and a hefty install size, a large portion of which will go untouched if you are only interested in playing Liberation, it’s hard not to imagine the potential complaints.

GameSpot reached out to Ubisoft for comment and is still waiting for a response. VG247 received this quote in response to their request, with Ubisoft’s promise that it will update these remarks if it has additional information about Liberation specifically.

“We don’t take the decision to retire services for older Ubisoft games lightly, and our teams are currently assessing all available options for players who will be impacted when these games’ online services are decommissioned on September 1st, 2022. We are also working with our partners to update this information across all storefronts, so players will be fully informed about the removal of online services at the point of purchase as well as via our support article where we shared the news.”

Originally released on the ill-fated Playstation Vita, Assassin’s Creed: Liberation is something of a cult classic in the series. It’s one of two games in the series to feature a black protagonist, and the only one without a male protagonist option. It also explores class and race in both thematic and mechanical ways, allowing hero Aveline access to different areas and conversations depending on which guise she takes on.
