Atomic Heart Won’t Have Ray Tracing At Launch, Despite Marketing Hype

Atomic Heart has plenty of Soviet nostalgia and big guns to blast robots with, but it’s apparently missing one thing that a lot of fans were expecting: support for ray tracing. Developer Mundfish confirmed the omission to Rock Paper Shotgun on its PC launch day, stating that it will “look into implementing it post-launch.”

While not every game needs ray tracing to look good, it’s a stunning reversal for a game that was marketed with an Nvidia tech demo in 2019, as well as an RTX emblazoned trailer from earlier this year. However, it is worth noting that the game does have DLSS support, so it will still present a lot better on RTX cards regardless.

Now Playing: Atomic Heart Everything To Know

So far, Mundfish hasn’t offered any possible timeline for the addition of ray tracing on PC or consoles, but we’ll update this story if we hear more. The studio has faced questions from journalists over its ties to Russian companies, as well as the game’s alleged pro-Soviet themes.

In GameSpot’s Atomic Heart review, critic Jordan Ramée praised the game’s visuals and interesting ideas, though he was less impressed with its predictable story and heavy influence from superior games, particularly the BioShock series. “Atomic Heart is certainly going to appeal to some people, especially those looking to relive BioShock Infinite, but it’s not an easy recommendation,” he wrote.
