Attack of the Clones: Apps Similar to Wordle Surface on the App Store

Wordle is a word game that has generated a massive amount of hype in a very short amount of time. The idea of the game is to get the people to guess the word of the day within 6 tries. The guesses and the word of the day are 5 letter words. With each try they, will see certain letters changing colour. If a letter turns green, then it exists in the word of the day and is in the correct position. If a letter turns yellow, then it exists in the word of the day but isn’t in the correct position, and if the letter turns grey or black, then it does not exist in the word of the day.

The true Wordle game can only be played on a Browser application, as it is hosted on a website by the New York Times and not on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. As the game’s popularity reaches new heights, many developers have started copying this great concept and applying it to their versions of Wordle.

As reported by The Verge, it is not the first time that this game has had to deal with Wordle Clones. Earlier this year,, a number of applications arrived on the App Store that sported the same or very similar concept to the original Wordle game. Just by searching for the term ‘Wordle’ in the App store search bar, players will be able to see the numerous clones this game has. Apple was prompt enough to get these applications removed immediately, but to no avail. Fast forward to a month later, new clone applications have arrived on the App store, with titles such as Wordl, Wordus, Word Guess, and more.

These clone applications almost always pick up the UI, color scheme, similar game play and tweak it a little bit to pass it off as their own. Players can check these applications out if they need to get that itch out of their head and play for another word or two. But they should be alert while using these applications as certain developers are known to add in-app purchases and other fees to make money off the player, whereas Wordle itself does not contain any fees or in-app purchases.

Wordle has been able gain this much hype due to 2 main reasons, first being the simplicity of it, anyone with a basic understanding of English can play the game. Second being, Wordle has been designed in such a way that players can guess the word of the day only once per day. This concept creates an itch in certain players’ heads to play the game more. This brilliant game was designed by a Brooklyn-based software engineer called Josh Wardle who hosted the game on his website before it was bought by the New York Times.
