Auburn RB Tank Bigsby’s fourth-quarter misstep helps fuel Alabama comeback in 2021 Iron Bowl

Auburn running back Tank Bigsby struggled for much of the 2021 Iron Bowl.

He carried 29 times for 63 yards, just 2.2 yards per attempt, and one of his runs late in the fourth quarter gave Alabama a chance to come back from a touchdown deficit with less than two minutes to play.

With 1:53 remaining, Auburn faced a second-and-11 at the Alabama 47. Bigsby ran for 10 yards but went out of bounds. That stopped the clock with 1:47 left. Had Bigsby stayed in bounds, the clock would have continued running.

On third-and-1, Bigsby was tackled for a loss of 4 and Alabama called its final timeout. Auburn punted on fourth down and pinned Alabama back at its 3, only to have the Tide drive 97 yards and tie the game 10-10 with 24 seconds to play.

The game went to overtime, where the teams traded touchdowns, field goals and 2-point conversions before Alabama eventually won 24-22 in four OTs.

Auburn quarterback T.J. Finley told reporters after the game that he didn’t think Bigsby went out on his own but instead was forced out by an Alabama defender. Jordan Battle was credited with the tackle on the play.

The Crimson Tide (11-1, 7-1 SEC) will face Georgia in next week’s SEC title game. Auburn drops to 6-6 and will now wait to see which bowl it goes to under first-year coach Bryan Harsin.
