Avatar: The Way Of Water Has Passed Titanic and Is Now the Third Highest-Grossing Film of All Time

Avatar: The Way of Water has officially crossed $2.243 billion at the global box office, meaning it has surpassed Titanic’s $2.242 billion to become the third highest-grossing film of all time.

Disney shared a video celebrating the milestone that showcased fans from all around the world supporting Avatar: The Way of Water alongside the big moments that led to it becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time.

Domestically, Avatar: The Way of Water has earned $657 million and just passed Jurassic World to become the ninth highest-grossing film of all time in North America. Internationally, it is sitting at $1.586 billion.

Now that Titanic is out of the way, Avatar: The Way of Water is now setting its sights on Avengers: Endgame. It will be a bit of a tough battle, as that mega film from 2019 earned $2.799 billion across the globe.

If Avatar: The Way of Water wants to claim the ultimate prize of being the highest-grossing film of all time globally, it will have to earn more than the $2.923 billion the original Avatar from 2009 has.

Even if it doesn’t pass Avengers: Endgame or the original Avatar, it is obviously an impressive achievement. It’s also of note because Avatar: The Way of Water helped James Cameron secure the first, third, and fourth highest-grossing films of all time in Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic, respectively.

Avatar: The Way of Water is only the sixth film in history to earn over $2 billion at the global box office, and that list also includes Avatar, Titanic, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

As for how the second Avatar film did this past weekend, it claimed second place with $6.4 million earned in North America and lost to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $104 million domestic weekend box office debut.
