BAFTA Will Be Changing the Format for Game Awards 2024

BAFTA or the British Academy of Film and Television Arts is known for its prestigious award ceremony that takes place annually. BAFTA has also introduced Game Awards, where all the best games of the years receive accolades across different category. It seems like BAFTA Game Awards 2024 will be massively different from the previous iteration, as it have recently announced some format changes.

According to a report by GameIndustry.Biz, the BAFTA Game Awards 2024 are going to see some big changes. Firstly, it has announced that the nominations for BAFTA Game Awards 2024 are now open, which is surprising as it is taking place much earlier than beore. Moreover, for the first time in its history, it will release a “full longlist of nominated games.”

Furthermore, big changes have been made to its top two award categories, The Best Game Award and the British Game Award. Earlier, the developers have been used to being judged by a “jury of industry experts” for these two categories. However, for the 2024 iteration of BAFTA Game Awards, the best game award and the British game award will be decided by the BAFTA Game Members, which is made up of more than 1,000 members of the gaming industry.

Moreover, developers are also being told to submit their titles for the game awards within a month after launch. If they make it in this window, then the entry fees will be half the price (175 GBP + VAT) of what it would after 30 days (350 GBP + VAT). Lastly, all games released between December 10, 2022 and November 24, 2023 will be a part of the nomination process; however, the deadline is November 9.

Tara Saunders, BAFTA games committee chair and PlayStation Studio London head, gave some clarity on these changes. For the 30-day submission period, Saunders has stated that this change has been made to get the games to “the hands of members as soon as possible.” This will provide them with more time “to play a broader selection of titles ahead of the first round voting.”

For the best game and British game award changes, Saunders stated that allowing more than 1,000 BAFTA game members to decide instead of a dedicated jury will allow for more engagement and inclusiveness for the members. Moreover, Saunders stated that jury discussions are better for judging a “specific craft or element of a game, like animation, art direction, audio and so on.”

Lastly, for its historical change of releasing a longlist of game nominations on December 14, 2023, Saunders stated that BAFTA hopes this move will help bring transparency and also add a broader selection of games “ahead of the jury and round two vote stages.”
