Bannan gives perfect reply to Sheff Wednesday fans that booed him after comeback

Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan had a clear message for the fans who booed him and his team-mates after they produced one of the most stunning comebacks in play-off history against Peterborough. Having lost 4-0 away in the first leg, a 5-1 extra-time win at Hillsborough sent the game to penalties where Jack Hunt scored the winner to send the home supporters into raptures.

The first leg defeat was not received well by the Wednesday supporters, however, as they booed Bannan and chanted ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt!’ at their team. The club’s head coach Darren Moore was also the subject of vile racist abuse on social media.

But Bannan had the perfect response after completing a historic comeback, praising his manager and sending a message to those fans that abused the team. He told Sky Sports: “Those who were booing us last week saying we’re not fit to wear the shirt, have a look at this.

“What he [Moore] has done is unbelievable, to turn around the mindset of the players. I’m so proud of him how he’s handled this week after the racism he’s experienced. That one’s for him.

“Everybody wrote us off. Everybody told us we couldn’t do it but it’s unbelievable. We’ve watched comebacks all week. It was all about believing. When we have the fans behind us, anything is possible.

“It’s the best game I’ve ever played in. I’m so happy because all these lads deserve it. I give everything for this club to get us promoted. Everybody wrote us off but we showed we’re made of strong stuff. We’re only halfway there.”

After the first leg, a racial social media message was aimed at Moore and condemned by the club. “Sheffield Wednesday are appalled by a repulsive racist message directed at Darren Moore,” said a club statement.

“We distance ourselves absolutely from this kind of abhorrent behaviour and have taken the appropriate steps by issuing an immediate ban on the individual in question from all SWFC fixtures and events.

“Sheffield Wednesday stand shoulder to shoulder with Darren, the football family and wider society in condemning all forms of discrimination. The club will offer our full support to Darren and we are working together with the authorities in ensuring this individual faces the full force of the law as a result of such a cowardly and despicable act.”
