Barbie: Greta Gerwig Reveals Her Views on a Sequel
The Barbie film, based on the iconic Mattel toy, has been a smashing success at the box office, shattering records left, right, and centre. The overwhelming response from fans has sparked numerous campaigns calling for a sequel. However, fans might be disappointed to learn that the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, has recently responded with reservations about a sequel.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Gerwig addressed the burning question on everyone’s mind: “Will we get Barbie 2?” Her response was candid, stating that at this moment, she has nothing more to offer for a sequel. According to Gerwig, after completing each film, she feels satisfied that she has explored all the ideas she had for it and doesn’t envision any further developments. While she would rather not discourage anyone’s hopes, she personally feels that she has reached a creative endpoint and is “totally at zero” when it comes to the possibility of a sequel.
This will come as disappointing news for many, as numerous fans have been hoping to see Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the entire ensemble reprise their roles. However, the announcement shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Gerwig is known for her standalone films rather than committing to a series of films. As a result, the prospect of Barbie 2 with Gerwig as the director appears unlikely at this moment.
Barbie review-bombed on Rotten Tomatoes
Seems like things have not been all hunky-dory for Barbie, as the film has become the latest victim of review bombing on Rotten Tomatoes. As reported by Screen Rant, Barbie’s critics’ rating and verified audience’s rating remain intact at 90% and 87%, respectively. However, the bombing has occurred in the all audience rating, where we see it fall to 75% at the time of writing.
This is being classified as review bombing, since the all audience score allows anyone to rate the film, even those who haven’t watched it. It’s worth noting that the verified audience rating, which represents people who actually bought tickets and watched the film, remains intact at 87%. Review bombing is not a new phenomenon; we’ve seen it happen recently in the gaming industry as well, with Horizon Forbidden West’s Burning Shores Expansion being review bombed due to one of its scenes. Unfortunately, Barbie is the latest victim of this trend.
Barbie breaks The Dark Knight’s record
It’s not all bad news for Barbie; in fact, it has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing one of Christopher Nolan’s films, and this time it’s not Oppenheimer. According to Variety’s report, Barbie has set a record for Warner Bros., previously held by The Dark Knight. During its release weekend, Barbie managed to rake in an impressive $26 million. On the other hand, The Dark Knight had earned $24.6 million (not adjusted for inflation), but it had held this record for the past 15 years.
