Barbie Star Talks About What is Needed for the Film to Resonate With a Wider Audience
Barbie is an iconic toy that has been enjoyed by generations of girls and their families. However, the steep pricing of Barbie dolls has made them unattainable for some children. America Ferrera, who stars in the upcoming Barbie film, has said that the film needs to address this issue in order for the brand to resonate with a wider audience.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Ferrera revealed that she did not have Barbie toys while growing up. She said that her family “couldn’t afford it” and that she “didn’t resonate with the world” of Barbie, as it didn’t represent her. However, she was drawn to the script for the upcoming Barbie film because it “expanded the world to include more of us” and gave her a chance to be a part of “something so iconic and archetypal and culturally dominant like Barbie.”
Ferrera added that Barbie “has set standards for girls and women for decades,” and she is genuinely happy that she could be a part of this legacy and help expand it. She also stated that this is probably why Barbie is still around: if she didn’t change, the world would consider her “antagonistic” and she wouldn’t be able to “survive in this culture.” Ferrera concluded by stating that this change needs to happen for Barbie to “mean anything to us” and “in order to resonate with new generations of young women and mothers, it just has to shift.”
Michael Cera talks about his character, Allan
On the topic of Barbie, in another interview with ScreenRant, Barbie co-star Michael Cera spoke about his character, Allan. Cera, the Superbad actor, stated that he read the script in a way that made him feel “Allan is sort of obsessed with Ken, if not in love with him.” Cera added that he loves the fact that Allan “only wants the best for Ken,” which could also mean not being around him. Cera said that Allan wants Ken to be happy and he thought “that was sort of a life of servitude in a way. Distant yearning.”
