Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman under added pressure after France beat Belgium

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman could now be operating on borrowed time after one of the club’s touted replacements, Roberto Martinez, crashed out of the Nations League with Belgium. The Dutchman’s sacking is thought to be a matter of time after a series of poor results, and could now be fast-tracked in light of Martinez’s newfound availability.

Although he could be set to land the biggest job of his career, Martinez’s mind is most likely still fixated on Belgium’s agonising defeat at the hands of France.

The Belgians raced into a 2-0 lead during the first half, only for Didier Deschamps’ side to draw level after the break.

Romelu Lukaku looked to have won it with minutes to spare, before France’s Theo Hernandez immediately stormed up the other end of the pitch to score the winner in a 3-2 triumph.

Many believed it was Martinez’s last chance to bring home silverware for Belgium’s ‘golden generation’, and perhaps his final opportunity has gone begging.

“When the team wins, the managers dream of other projects, and when they lose they are on the verge of being sacked.

“You get used to it and you live outside of all this.”

Of course, a large part of that was Martinez being diplomatic and focusing on the important task at hand, but now that the Nations League dream is over, he is free to think about other things.

Many expected this international break to be the trigger point for Barcelona to change hands. After the events of Thursday night, this could now be the case.
