Barry’s Cast Previews the Final Season: ‘I Dare People to Guess What Happens’

Bill Hader is ready to part ways with the notorious hitman-turned-aspiring actor Barry Berkman.

“Actually, saying goodbye to Barry was pretty uneventful,” Hader told IGN. “We did a shot and that was it. And then Gavin Kleintop, the first AD, was like, ‘You know that’s your last shot?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah.’”

However, the Barry co-creator and star did recall how the last day of shooting was “really emotional” for the cast and crew.

“It was funny because I gave a speech when we wrapped, and I got emotional during the speech. Basically just telling everybody, like, ‘Thank you for working so hard and everything,’ and then it was weird because two months later, we did reshoots, so they were all there,” Hader said with a laugh. “It’s kind of like saying goodbye to someone and hugging them, and then you walk the same direction to your cars.”

The fourth season of Barry sees the titular assassin in prison following his arrest in the Season 3 finale. All eight episodes of the final season were directed by Hader, who said the experience “was a challenge, but it was very rewarding.”

“Just on a pragmatic level, I think anytime we bring a director in, I drive them crazy,” Hader explained. “It was our producer, Aida Rogers, that said, ‘I think you need to direct them all because you’re kind of a control freak.’”

“I loved it. You know, taking nothing away from the previous directors, all of whom I just had such a great time working with — Alec Berg and Hiro Murai, I mean, just incredible directors,” said Anthony Carrigan, who plays Chechen mobster NoHo Hank. “But what was really special about this was that Bill, I think, had such a concise vision for what this final season was. And he had such an idea about it that translated so well into something so unique, that is not seen anywhere else on television.”

“It was odd being in a working prison and having Bill dressed as an inmate saying, ‘Now go here and do this,’” added Stephen Root, who plays Barry’s handler Monroe Fuches. “But I think it helped to be in a prison when we shot this stuff. You weren’t in a soundstage or anywhere — you had this atmosphere around you.”

While the actors did not reveal any particular scenes in Season 4, Root hinted that the final episode “offers a large amount of closure.”

“Are there always questions at the end of somebody who is this type of character? Yeah, I think you could leave an open box,” he continued. “But I really feel like the season ended as it should.”

“The final episode is like a work of art,” Carrigan said. “I think that this show, from the very beginning, has been something that you can’t quite pin down. You watch it, and it is full of so many moments, and there’s not a moment where you check out. In 30 minutes, I feel like you pack so much in, and I think the final episode will definitely be representative of that.”

“I dare people to guess what happens,” Carrigan teased. “Everyone’s gonna get it wrong.”
