Batgirl Directors Would Still Work With DC Despite Surprise Cancellation

Despite Warner Bros. Discovery deciding not to release the nearly-finished Batgirl movie, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would still be open to working on a DC movie if the right opportunity arose. Speaking to THR, the Bargirl directors laid out their very reasonable conditions for returning to the studio.

“Yeah, we’d still work with them,” Fallah said. “But on the condition that the movie comes out. I mean, if Warner says ‘do you want to do the next Batman or Superman?,’ of course we’ll say yes. Just so long as the movie comes out!”

Batgirl was a casualty of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s cost-cutting measures this past August. According to industry insiders, the Batgirl movie was at risk of not making its budget back, causing the company to use Batgirl’s production as a tax write-down.

New DC Studios head James Gunn reached out to the Batgirl directors, with Arbi saying “the meetings are in the books”. Gunn is working with Peter Safran on creating DC’s “Biggest Story Ever told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects”, so there would certainly be enough work to go around if both parties were interested in working together again.

El Arbi and Fallah have previously spoken about their reactions with the cancellation, with Fallah saying, “First, when I heard the news, I was shocked, I didn’t know how to react… I wanted to break stuff, cry, even laugh. I was like, ‘This is not happening.’”

While the #ReleaseBatgirl movement may never lead to anything concrete, there’s a lot happening in the world of DC. for more, you can check out why Henry Cavill’s official return as Superman is the best news the DCEU could have asked for.
