BBC’s Gary Lineker fiasco may see Match of the Day axed in £211m steal

The BBC could face losing the rights to broadcast Match of the Day in the wake of their Gary Lineker row, according to reports. Other mainstream channels seem to be sniffing blood as the future of the popular Premier League highlights show hangs in the balance.

According to The Telegraph, competition for domestic TV packages could be ‘fiercer than it has been for years’ in 2023.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has confirmed that auctioning for the next three-year cycle will begin this year.

And amid reported budget cuts at the BBC, rival broadcasters could feel an opportunity brewing to snatch Match of the Day’s £211million rights.

The Beeb have dominated terrestrial highlights since ITV lost the rights to broadcast their Premiership show in 2004.
