BCCI AGM: Roger Binny to be given top job tomorrow; questions linger on ICC issue

At the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, former India player Roger Binny is set to replace Sourav Ganguly as the new Board President.

Apart from Binny, the other office bearers of BCCI to be inducted — or re-inducted — include secretary Jay Shah, Ashish Shelar (treasurer), Rajeev Shukla (vice-president) and Devajit Saikia (join secretary).

Arun Dhumal, the outgoing BCCI treasurer, will be the chief of the newly formed IPL governing council.

The issue of ICC chairmanship will also be discussed at the meeting, to be held in Mumbai.

The office bearers of the next board will be elected unopposed, so the meeting is just a formality. Questions, however, remain on the other agenda as BCCI will deliberate if India should field a candidate for the ICC chairmanship, or back Greg Barclay, the incumbent, for another term.

The ICC Board will hold a meeting in Melbourne from November 11-13. The last date for filing the nominations for the ICC top job is October 20.

It may be noted that Ganguly’s exit already created quite a stir. At the meeting, all eyes will be on whether the BCCI chooses to propose the former Indian skipper’s name for the ICC top post.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and former BCCI president N Srinivasan are other names doing the rounds currently.

Srinivasan (78) is eligible to contest the age factor could go against him. Thakur, on the other hand, is expected to get busy with his political commitments as the Himachal polls near.

Other issues on the agenda
According to PTI reports, two representatives of Indian Cricketers’ Association on the BCCI Apex Council will be inducted to replace Anshuman Gaikwad and Shantha Rangaswamy.

They will, however, only be elected at the ICA election (October 27-29).

Ashok Malhotra, the current ICA president, and Dilip Vengsarkar, former India captain, are contesting for the posts of male representative on the Apex Council.

At the meeting, the date of the IPL auction will be decided. There will also be a discussion on the inaugural WIPL, PTI reported. Five teams will be part of the league initially but how they will be sold could be decided on Tuesday, it said.

Deliberations will also be done on the tax liability for the ODI World Cup to be held in India next year.
