BCCI records Rs 27,411 crore revenue during FY18-22
Chaudhury was replying to a to a question by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) MP Anil Desai. Desai had posed a question to the finance minister, asking if the government was aware of BCCI’s status as the second wealthiest sports organisation globally? He had also requested the government to provide information about BCCI’s income, expenditures and tax details over the last five years.
In response to the inquiry, Chaudhary stated on Tuesday that the government did not maintain data regarding the financial standings of sports bodies on a global scale, but he did share the board’s figures with the Upper House.
In 2017, BCCI sold media rights of Indian Premier League (IPL) for a whopping Rs 16,147 crore to Star India, which is now known as Disney Star. The media rights fee was more than double the Rs 8,200 crore that Sony Pictures Networks India paid for the 10-year period from 2008 to 2017.
In the year after that, it successfully sold the media rights to India cricket matches for Rs 6,138 crore to Disney Star. Star India had bagged BCCI media rights in 2012 for Rs 3,851 crore.
It had also inked sponsorship deals with brands like Paytm, MPL, Byju’s, and MasterCard, among others.
BCCI, which is the world’s richest cricket board, paid Rs 4,298 crore in income tax in these five years. It incurred an expenditure of Rs 15,170 crore during the period. In FY18, BCCI earned revenue of Rs 2,917 crore, which shot up to Rs 7,606 crore in FY22 due to a surge in income from IPL and India cricket media rights.
BCCI’s income is expected to reach another level in FY24 as it has signed Rs 48,390-crore deals with Disney Star and Viacom 18 for five years. It has also signed new sponsors like Adidas and Dream11.
The cricket board has also launched the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which had a successful outing this year. It mopped up Rs 4,670 crore from the sale of five WPL teams. It also sold the WPL media rights to Viacom 18 for Rs 951 crore. It also raked in ₹200 crore worth of sponsorship deals for the WPL.
