Bengaluru FC reach ISL final with sudden-death win over Mumbai City | Football News – Times of India

BENGALURU: With nothing much to separate Bengaluru FC and League Shield winners Mumbai City FC at the end of 120 minutes of nerve-wracking action at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, it were Bengaluru FC who had the last laugh as they pipped Mumbai City FC 9-8 in sudden death tie-breaker to advance to the final of the Indian Super League on Sunday.
With the match poised on knife’s edge, after Mumbai took the second leg 2-1 and made it 2-2 in aggregate, even the penalty shootout didn’t provide a winner with the score reading 5-5. But it was Mumbai who blinked first in sudden-death at 8-8 as BFC ‘keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu came up with a fine save to deny Mehtab Singh.
BFC’s star defender Sandesh Jhingan, who was one of the main reasons why BFC forced the match into the tie-breaker, scored with ease to trigger the celebrations.
This is BFC’s third entry into the final and they will take on the winners of the match between Hyderabad FC and ATK Mohun Bagan. The exciting tussle in the second leg of the semifinal between two of India’s top teams produced riveting action much to the delight of nearly 22,000 fans.
If Mumbai deserved credit to rally back from a goal down and produce a dominating second half, BFC’s defence stood strong surviving a flurry of onslaughts.
There was not a single dull moment in the first half too as a wounded Mumbai and determined Bengaluru went all out in search of goals.
Mumbai got a golden chance in the seventh minute when referee Rahul Kumar Gupta pointed to the spot after Sandhu brought down Pereyra Diaz. Brit Greg Steward took the kick but Sandhu made amends, diving low to his left to deny Mumbai.
