Beyond Good & Evil 2 Creative Director Passes Away Suddenly
Beyond Good & Evil 2 creative director Emile Morel has passed away. He was 40. News of Morel’s passing was spotted by IGN via a LinkedIn post from Ubisoft Montpellier.
“We would like to take a moment to acknowledge the significant impact he made over the years on different games that make up the rich history of our studio,” reads an excerpt from the statement. “For us, Emile was a close friend and a boundless source of positive energy. We all valued his passion and the way he told stories.”
Ubisoft also expressed gratitude for Morel’s contributions to Beyond Good & Evil 2 and says the game’s “universe will forever endure.”
Beyond Good & Evil 2 producer Greg Hermittant issued a statement about Morel’s passing, as well. “You’ve been such a great and kind partner during all these years at Ubisoft,” Hermittant said. “Be assured we will continue your work.”
While Morel was currently serving as creative director for Beyond Good & Evil 2, he also worked on Rayman Legends, which launched in 2013. In addition, as noted by GamesIndustry.biz, Morel was a designer at Eden Games and helped ship Test Drive Unlimited and Alone in the Dark.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 was originally announced in 2008 before being shown for the first time at E3 2017. Since then, Ubisoft has quietly worked on the game without providing any meaningful developmental updates. It’s still in the works, but there’s no word yet on when it will release.
