BGMI fans, this is what KRAFTON CEO Sean Hyunil Sohn has to say on gaming in India – Times of India

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) was banned by the government in July 2022. The game was removed from both Google Play Store and Apple App Store after an order from MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology). The ban came just days after BGMI celebrated 100 million downloads in the country.
Ever since, the fans have been waiting for the game to make a comeback in the country. There have also been several leaks and rumours regarding the game’s potential comeback. However, the game’s return in the country is still not confirmed as neither the government nor the game’s developer has issued any official statement about the title’s return date. In a statement issued last month, BGMI’s publisher and developer, Krafton mentioned that the game is expected to return to India soon, but didn’t mention any particular date. Talking about expectations from the gaming market in India during the year 2023, Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO, KRAFTON, reiterated that the company remains committed to the Indian market.

“India is rapidly developing into a gaming hub and in 2022 the country has become the largest consumer of mobile games with 15 billion downloads. Expected to grow over 20% in FY23 and onwards. In 2023, we will continue to accelerate our focus in the field of metaverse and Web 3.0 to build ecosystems and provide unique gaming experiences for users. We remain committed to the India market and will continue to launch new titles and work with our partners to further the vision of a holistic gaming ecosystem in India,” said Sohn. K

In November 2022, during the company’s Q3 earnings report, the developer said that it is focused on the efforts to resume the game’s operations in India. “Krafton is continuing its efforts to resume services for BGMI in India and the company will continue investing in the Indian games market,” said the statement.
Callisto Protocol launch
In December 2022, KRAFTON announced the global launch of its all-new sci-fi survival horror game – The Callisto Protocol. The Callisto Protocol is claimed to be a next-generation take on survival horror, featuring a terrifying science-fiction story and a brutal new combat system. In India, the game is available digitally and players can buy the game on Steam or console digital storefronts.
