BGMI Unban: Indian Esports Industry Reacts to the Return of Battleground Mobile India

Battlegrounds Mobile India’s return has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the popular mobile battle royale game. Not just them, the Esports industry is also extremely excited with BGMI’s return. It’s no surprise given BGMI was the most dominant Esports title in the country before its eventual ban.

BGMI kickstarted the immense popularity of Esports in the country. It is a mobile game that amassed over 100 million registered users by July 2022, and led the pro gaming scene, in India which was growing rapidly.

Various Esports organisations in India started their journey into the Esports industry with a BGMI squad and later on expanded to other titles. Here is the reaction of various top Esports industry leaders on BGMI unban in India.

Skyesports

Shiva Nandy, founder and CEO of Skyesports said:

“I welcome Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) return to India and extend congratulations to Krafton for accomplishing this feat.

The game was an integral part of our Esports roadmap before and while we have diversified to other titles, we look forward to integrating India’s favorite battle royale title to our IPs like the Skyesports League, Skyesports Championship, and more in the near future.

The return of the game comes at a great time and will ensure a growth of India’s gaming and esports industry.”

Revenant Esports

Revenant Esports founder and CEO Rohit Jagasia said:

Government of India

Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology has clarified that Krafton has been given 3-month trial approval from the Indian government for BGMI.

This approval came after Krafton complied with issues raised by the Indian government including data security issues and BGMI server locations. The government will also keep a “close watch” on other issues such as user harm and addiction. Final approval by the government will be given at end of the 3-month trial after assessing the situation.

Loco

Gaming and esports streaming platform Loco also commented on BGMI. Loco founders, Ashwin Suresh & Anirudh Pandita said:

Apart from the Esports team organisations, we also received a comment from Mr Lokesh Suji, Director of Esports Federation of India (ESFI) and Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF).

“The long-awaited return of BGMI after a 10-month hiatus is a much-needed boost for the Esports community in our country. We express our gratitude to the government of India for bringing back the game for the nation’s passionate gaming audience and promoting the Esports ecosystem through this development.

While the game is set to undergo certain changes to ensure a safe and enjoyable gaming experience for users upon its comeback on a trial period, it is encouraging to see the government bringing these safety measures for the youth of the country.

With Esports getting official recognition from the government and the community adapting well to the absence of BGMI by expanding other titles, we eagerly anticipate the exponential growth that the sector will experience now that the game is back in the picture.”
