Bing: Microsoft launches ‘new’ Bing, Edge browser powered by ‘upgraded’ ChatGPT model – Times of India

Microsoft has launched ‘new’ Bing search engine and Edge web browser that is powered by the next generation of OpenAI‘s language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT. The development comes a day after Google announced Bard – its own ‘experimental conversational AI service’ that is powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).
“To empower people to unlock the joy of discovery, feel the wonder of creation and better harness the world’s knowledge, today we’re improving how the world benefits from the web by reinventing the tools billions of people use every day, the search engine and the browser,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president & consumer chief marketing officer.
AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser are available in a limited preview at Bing.com and will be “expanded to millions soon.” Everyone can visit Bing.com to try sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. “We’re going to scale the preview to millions in the coming weeks. A mobile experience will also be in preview soon,” Microsoft announced.
‘Copilot for the web’
Microsoft is calling the new Bing and Edge as users’ AI copilot for the web as they are claimed to deliver better search, more complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content.
“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search. Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft.
What’s new in Bing and Edge
– Better search: Microsoft says that new Bing will give users “an improved version of the familiar search experience.” As per the company, the search engine will provide more relevant results for simple queries like sports scores, stock prices and weather, and more comprehensive answers in a new sidebar.
– Complete answers: Just like Google announced in the case of Bard, Bing will also review results from the web to find and summarise the answer.
– New chat experience: For complex searches, such as for planning a detailed trip itinerary or researching what TV to buy, the new Bing will offer new, interactive chat.
“The chat experience empowers you to refine your search until you get the complete answer you are looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas – with links available so you can immediately act on your decisions,” the company explained.
– Apart from these, the new Bing can generate content for users. It can write an email, prep for a job interview or create a quiz for trivia night.
The new Bing will also cite all its sources allowing users to see the links to the web content it references.

When it comes to Microsoft Edge, Microsoft says it has updated the Edge browser with new AI capabilities and a new look.
There are two new functionalities: Chat and compose. With the Edge Sidebar, users can ask for a query, like a summary of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways, and then use AI chat for comparison.
Users will also be able to ask Edge to compose content, such as a LinkedIn post – just like the way it is done in ChatGPT.
Updated OpenAI model in Bing
Microsoft says that the new Bing runs on a new, next-generation OpenAI large language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and customised specifically for search. “It takes key learnings and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 – and it is even faster, more accurate and more capable,” the company claims.
The Windows-maker also says that it has developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows the company to best leverage its power and call it the Prometheus model.
Prometheus model will be responsible for delivering more relevant, timely and targeted results, with improved safety.

Responsible innovation
Just like Google mentioned, Microsoft and OpenAI are implementing safeguards to defend against harmful content.
“Our teams are working to address issues such as misinformation and disinformation, content blocking, data safety and preventing the promotion of harmful or discriminatory content in line with our AI principles,” the company said.
Microsoft will use ‘critical feedback’ to improve the AI models.
