Black Caps power hitter makes T20 tournament team

Black Caps batter Glenn Phillips has been rewarded for his standout efforts at the T20 World Cup in Australia.

The middle-order power hitter is the lone New Zealand player named in the International Cricket Council’s team of the tournament.

Phillips belted a stunning century to lead the Black Caps to victory over Sri Lanka, his 104 from just 64 balls including 10 fours and four sixes.

He followed that up in New Zealand’s last group game against England, although his 62 from only 36 was not enough to prevent a 20-run Black Caps defeat.

Phillips also produced a highlight moment in the Super 12 stage opener against Australia, taking a spectacular diving catch in the outfield.

Players from six different teams were named in the team of the tournament.

Captain, wicketkeeper and opening batter Jos Buttler, fellow opener Alex Hales, seamer Sam Curran and fast bowler Mark Wood all made the cut for England after they won their second T20 World Cup title.

There were also spots for Phillips, Indian batting duo Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav, Pakistan pair Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shahdab Khan, South African quick Anrich Nortje and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza in the line-up.

The side was selected by a panel featuring commentators Ian Bishop and Mel Jones, former West Indian international Shivnarine Chanderpaul journalist Partha Bhaduri and ICC General Manager of Cricket Wasim Khan.
