The new season of Black Mirror is more meta than ever, as creator Charlie Brooker takes aim at the streaming platform his show is available on.
The premiere episode of Season 6 titled “Joan is Awful” showcases the story of Joan, a tech CEO, who finds her real-life story being retold by a series on streaming platform, Streamberry. The series also called “Joan is Awful” uses a quantum computer to recreate the events of Joan’s life using CGI.
In the series, Joan finds out that the platform is able to do so, because she agreed to Streamberry’s usage of her personal data after signing the platform’s terms and conditions while signing up.
Many have pointed out Streamberry’s resemblance to Netflix, as they share a similar logo design and color palette. Similarly, the interface of the platforms is not that different to each other. However, the main difference between the two is that you won’t have to worry about Netflix using your personal data to create a series centered around you. Or have they?
While the current generation of technology isn’t adept to creating CGI for a whole show like Joan is Awful, Netflix has allowed users to try and create the show of their dreams.
The streaming platform has launched a new website called youareawful.com, which brings Streamberry to life. On the website you can join the Streamberry family by creating an account. To do so, you will have to provide your name and a photo. The app then asks you to accept Netflix’s terms and conditions, and the platform’s usage of images just like the Black Mirror episode.
With that, it creates a Streamberry UI interface, which is headline by a fictional “[Your Name] is Awful” show, which is showcased with the image the user has provided. Users can do so multiple times with different images and names.
