Black Panther: Okoye Actress Hints at a Possible Spin-Off, Discusses Resonance of Her Character With Black Women
Okoye from Black Panther has become a fan-favourite and fans have been expecting a spin-off based on the character. The Dora Milaje’s General is played by Danai Gurira, who has hinted at the possibility of getting her spin-off.
Okoye made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of 2018’s Black Panther. Gurira showed her acting prowess as the leader of Wakanda’s all-female elite group of warriors. Her return in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was received even better, as Okoye gets more focus on her with her own character arc.
In a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Gurira hinted that Marvel may be working on a spin-off series focused on Okoye. “I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility, so I am gently alluding. Just gently,” she stated.
How Okoye resonates with black women
Gurira also discussed with Colbert the impact of her character on black women. She said that she had some apprehensions about the character’s story, but soon understood how powerful it was after seeing audiences’ reaction to it.
Not only is Okoye strong and fierce, but she is also shown to be vulnerable, and her weakness is exposed in the film. This exploration of the character sets her apart and is refreshing to see. Gurira said that black women came up to her to express their appreciation of this aspect of Okoye.
“I realized how powerful it would be to actually allow her character to go through failing and complications that cause her to not be able to stand strong and hold everything together. She has to go through her brokenness, too,” said Gurira.
