Black Voices in Gaming: Everything Featured at the June 2023 Showcase

Since its creation, Black Voices in Gaming’s mission has been dedicated to providing the spotlight for Black game developers in the industry. And one such effort includes hosting a showcase to spotlight upcoming indie games made by black developers. If you missed the organization’s latest showcase, here’s every game spotlight today.

Breeze in The Clouds

Announced last month at the Humble Games Showcase, Breeze in the Clouds is a new 2D hand-drawn platformer where you play as a corgi that is using his newfound power to fight pollution. The showcase gave us some new gameplay of Breeze in the Clouds.

The game’s director and producer, SrBilyon Harris, appeared on stream to discuss what inspired him to create Breeze in the Clouds. Harris explained that he decided to make the character a corgi because he wanted to find a cool but small dog as the playable character.

Breeze in the Clouds has no release date, but you can wishlist the game now on Steam.

Hyper Light Breaker

Hyper Light Breaker is a 3D co-op action-adventure developed by Heart Machine, the studio behind Solar Ash and Hyper Light Drift. Danielle Wallace, a 3D Environment Artist at Heart Machine, came on the stream to talk about her career and how she helped contribute to the background city featured in Hyper Light Breaker, noting “about 85 percent of [her]” helped create it.

Hyper Light Breaker is slated to launch this Fall.

RollerGirl

RollerGirl is a narrative-driven adventure game where you play as a girl named Naomi as she explores local neighborhoods in a small Canadian town.

RollerGirl 3D Artist and Game Designer Indigo Doyle appeared in the showcase, providing background on the game’s development, talking a bit about the main character and the story, and providing commentary on the gameplay that appeared on the stream. This includes revealing how her previous job delivering newspapers inspired a side quest in the game.

Doyle mentioned in her interview during the showcase that the team plans to use music from local Ontario artists, using tracks that “match the vibe of the game.”

RollerGirl currently does not have a release date, but there is a demo you can download on itch.io. Doyle mentioned that the development team hopes to finish development on RollerGirl “within a year.”

Coreupt

Coreupt is a new fighting game developed by Team Corrupt. We previously learned that the game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in addition to PC. Jesse Wright, the creator and director of Coreupt, was interviewed during today’s showcase and talked a lot about the develoopment process.
